Choosing a Samsung Soundbar: 5 Things to Check
Samsung sells soundbars at every level, from compact 2.1 bars to an 11.1.4 system with rear speakers in the box. The model names look alike, so it helps to know what the numbers mean before you compare them.
5 things to check before you buy
- Read the channel numbers. The first number is the count of main channels, the second is the subwoofer and the third is the number of upward-firing drivers for Dolby Atmos height effects.
- Decide on rear speakers. Bars with wireless rears in the box give real surround sound. Without them, the bar relies on side-firing drivers and processing.
- Check for Dolby Atmos. A third number above zero, such as 5.1.2, means the bar has up-firing drivers. Entry models use virtual processing instead.
- Match the bar to your TV. Q-Symphony lets a compatible Samsung TV play its own speakers together with the bar, and it only works when both are Samsung.
- Think about placement. Up-firing drivers need a flat ceiling above them, and a wireless subwoofer still needs a power outlet near where it will sit.
Three picks to start with

- Best Without Rear Speakers: Samsung HW-Q900F, with 7.1.2 channels from side, top and wide-firing speakers, plus a subwoofer.
- Best Value Dolby Atmos: Samsung HW-Q800F, with 5.1.2 channels, a compact subwoofer and room calibration.
